A three-day juried festival of the world’s most cutting-edge, quirky, and boundary-pushing animation.     The state fair just wound up but the PG County Fair starts today and the Anne Arundel County Fair starts next weekend. Check out all the great fair food, games and rides, but also be sure to check out the agricultural exhibits, crafts and other great stuff.


    Sat 9/7 - Books for International Goodwill - B.I.G. Book Sale - Just off of Defense Highway past vehicle emissions, their warehouse has more than 70,000 books covering all categories. Books generally cost between $1 and $3 with children’s books being even cheaper generally!


    Tues 9/10 - Sketch Night: “Beautiful Decay” - A monthly gathering for anyone wanting to let loose for an evening of sketching and artistic community. Charles Lawrence of FinArt hosts this month with the theme of “Beautiful Decay: Nature Drawing with Skulls and Bones” featuring still life created from the collection of Charles Lawrence

    Pongos Learning Lab/Coder Kids Club - Crofton

    One more summer camp.. Next week, Tuesday through Friday because of the holiday, Pongos is having their KinderSTEAM Camp for kids starting kindergarten this year. Kids can come for one or more days, either morning or afternoon session (or both) and they’ll enjoy fun, age-appropriate activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math!

    Sat 8/24 - Beverly Triton Nature Park - Faires in the Woods - Bring the kids and learn how fairies of storybook legend might use elements of nature to build their homes, providing camoflage and protection. This is a great way to engage children in nature and spark their imaginations. Kids will spend time scavenging supplies and building their own fairy homes.

    Wed 8/28 - Sandy Point - Invasive Species Hike - Join a park naturalist for a guided hike at Sandy Point State Park to learn about invasive species found in Maryland.

    Also, be sure to check out “Evolve: Paintings by Jeff Huntington” at the Jo Fleming Contemporary Art on Maryland Ave, an exhibition of Jeff’s contemporary portaiture in oil on panels or canvas as well as cut paper. You’ve seen Jeff’s large scale work all around town but here’s a chance to see more of his work without driving all around town.


    Chesapeake Children’s Museum

    Sun 8/25 - 3D Art - Kids ages 5-12 will construct scupltures with a variety of materials including wood, wire, cloth, natural objects and more.

    Wed 8/28 - Adventures in Watercolor & Textures - Learn about using different materials and techniques for creating interesting backgrounds in watercolor. You don’t need to have watercolor experience to enjoy this workshop.

    Raye of Light is also doing some good work outside the shop… including a workshop on Tues 8/27 - working with alcohol ink at the Arnold Senior Center.

    This weekend - Annapolis Artisan’s Market - a monthly open house and exhibit where you can check out their workspace, meet the artists and buy some fun items.

    Fri 8/23 - Comedy Film Night - Check out this family friendly monthly film night that will entertain and educate.. This month’s feature is Loony Toons! This event is free but donations are always appreciated.

    Sat 8/24 - Macro Photography Workshop - Macro photography is all about getting closer to your subject and seeing it in a way that you can’t see from a distance. There will be several stations set up including a self contained light box, a glass plate with glycerin drops a well as a still life station with flowers and engagement rings. After lunch, the action moves outside to work with natural light.

    All next week - 3D Sculpture Summer Camp - Students will be introduced to the principles of sculpture then work with reusable clay, wood sculpture from cut shapes and the final project will use a substructure and plaster.

    Sun/Mon - Glass Fusing - Summer Cactus Plate - Turn up the heat with this summer cactus glass fusing workshop! Creat eyour own desert cactus scene with glass! You’ll be guided through cutting, shaping and laying down your glass design.

    Summer’s almost over, but there’s still time for more Pongos summer camps…

    Little Learners Pre-K STEAM Camp - This half day sampler camp will have kids spending mornings exploring the worlds of STEAM. Topics include gross/messy/fun science, the technology of robots, engineering with Lego bricks, a day of music and art and a day full of fun and engaging math.


    Gamer Club Summer Camp for kids K-8 - Kids will spend the whole day playing games, but many of them are educational and there will be challenges to participate in. Kids will also have an opportunity to learn about game design, development, escape rooms and more.

    Sat 8/17 - Beverly Triton Nature Park - Dragons of the Chesapeake - Speaking of dragons.. If a trip to Solomons Island isn’t in the cards for Saturday, check out Beverly Triton Nature Park for Dragons of the Chesapeake - Not real dragons, or even dragon boats, but dragonFLIES. Dragonflies play an important role in our ecosystem and you can learn all about them and ID different types along with a park ranger.

    Sun 8/18 - Quiet Waters Park - Charity Knitting - Every month during the summer, Quiet Waters hosts a Charity Knitting event. This will be the last one of the season. Knit or crochet baby hats and blankets for the Anne Arundel Medical Center. All skill levels are welcome!

    Sun 8/18 - Aviation Days - Learn about the contributions of the Wright Brothers and the Wright Sister as well as other early aviators through hands-on activities with flyable objects, for ages 1 and up.

    All next week - El Cipitio - This bilingual storytelling camp for middle school students has children putting together costumes and simple sets for a performance at the end of the week. Folktales from Latin American will be featured.

    All next week - Girls with Graphite Summer Camp - For girls who are constantly doodling and want to learn how to draw better. They’ll learn about lines, shading and how those affect their drawing style as they learn to draw more realistically.

    Animation All Stars Summer Camp - Join Pongos for a week of animation and more! Kids will learn about animation terminology, storyboarding and storytelling, character planning and drawing, traditional, stop-motion, and computer based animation. This camp is for kids in K through 8th grades last school year.

    LEGO Robotics Summer Camp - Kids grades 2-4 will learn how to combine LEGO bricks with gears, pulleys, motors, sensors and programmable parts to build and code robots. This camp will be held at the All Sport Kids Academy in Gambrills.

    County fair season continues with the Queen Annes, Montgomery, Howard and Caroline-Dorchester county fairs!

    This morning 8/8 - Paca House and Garden - Family Paint Party - Inspire your child’s creativity with this family-friendly morning guided painting session. All materials are provided.

    Tonight 8/8 - Great Frogs Winery - Petals, Pours and Pix, a Flower Crown Workshop and Photoshoot - Create your own bohemian flower child photos with this amazing location, flowers provided by Eclectic Blooms and photography by Jennifer Simmons! A perfect girls’ night out, mommy and me or maternity photo session! Start the night with sangria and snacks, build your flower crown while you enjoy a wine tasting, then head into the vineyard or tobacco barn for your photo shoot.

    Pongos Learning Lab/Coder Kids Club - Crofton

    Two more great summer camps from Pongos Learning Lab in Crofton next week:

    First is Escape Rooms and Game Design for kids who were in K-8 last year. It’s a week of games, puzzles, adventure, mystery and logic. They’ll be playing, solving and making logic games, brain teasers and riddles and they’ll also get to attempt to “escape the camp” with a real escape room.

    Second, Pongos has a Gross, Messy and Fun Science Camp - Kids K-5 will make sticky, slimy, fizzy and fluffy stuff out of everyday materials as well as learning about gross stuff.
